What is Hair Restoration?

There are two main techniques that are used for hair restoration or hair transplant surgery. One procedure is called the follicular unit transplant (FUT) or “strip” procedure and the other is called the follicular unit excision (FUE) procedure. Both of these procedures offer a high probability of success. The two procedures are both a tremendous upgrade from previous techniques where hair “plugs” or large incisions were used to attempt to restore the hair. These previous procedures led to artificial and unnatural results and are not used anymore.

The Hair Restoration Procedure

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Hair Restoration?

Hair loss is a common issue that concerns many patients. Hair loss has been associated with loss of confidence in the individual with hair loss along with a perception by others of a more stern or unhappy appearance. These issues are even more pronounced in women with hair loss. Because hair loss is such a devastating to the individual, the restoration of hair loss is one of the most satisfying procedures to patients. The results are permanent and have a high likelihood, greater than 95%, of success.

Dr. Ward is one of only a few plastic surgeons across the country who offers hair restoration services. The most important aspects of the procedure is the design of the hairline and implantation of the grafts. This is important to achieve a result that is natural and will continue to look good over the years. Men and women are both equally good candidates for non-surgical and surgical hair restoration.

Procedure Description

The new techniques that are utilized take advantage of the fact that the hair on the sides of the head and the back of the head are immune to the effects of hair loss, such as in male pattern hair loss. When these hair follicles are transplanted to the parts of the scalp that have been effected by hair loss, they maintain their ability to produce hair, despite the fact that they were moved to a different part of the scalp.

The FUE and FUT procedures have many similarities. For example, they both utilize the same technique to implant the grafts into the scalp. However, they differ in how the grafts are removed from the scalp. In the FUT technique, a “strip” of hair-bearing scalp tissue is removed and the follicles are removed from this strip. The scalp defect resulting from the removal of the strip of hair is then surgically closed. This scar heals well with a thin line in almost all cases. This scar is nearly completely invisible unless the hair is worn very short.

If a scar on the back and side of the head is a concern, then the FUE technique is more appropriate. This technique uses a tiny machine to surgically remove each individual graft. Each of these grafts is then transplanted to the non-hair bearing regions of the scalp.  The success rates with both procedures are quite high and patients are very pleased with the results.

Recovery Process

The recovery process for hair restoration can vary depending on the specific technique used, the extent of the procedure, and the individual's healing process. However, here are some general guidelines for the recovery process:

  • Initial recovery period: The first few days after the procedure, it is common to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the scalp area. Pain medications and ice packs can help manage these symptoms.
  • Rest and healing: It is important to rest and avoid any strenuous activity, including exercise, for the first week after the procedure to allow the scalp to heal. Patients are usually advised to avoid heavy lifting or bending over as well.
  • Post-operative care: The surgeon will provide specific instructions on how to care for the scalp in the days following the procedure, including how to clean the scalp and hair. Patients may need to use special shampoos and avoid hair products that can irritate the scalp.
  • Follow-up appointments: Patients will typically have follow-up appointments with their surgeon to monitor their progress and remove any sutures if necessary.
  • Hair growth: It can take several months for the transplanted hair to start growing, and the full results may not be visible for up to a year. Patients are advised to be patient and follow the post-operative care instructions to help ensure the best possible outcome.

It is important to note that individual recovery experiences can vary, and patients should always follow their surgeon's instructions and guidelines for the best possible recovery and outcome.
