What You Need To Know About Breast Augmentation

These are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers about breast augmentation:

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to change the size, shape, contours, and other breast characteristics.

What Are the Reasons for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is performed for people who have:

  • Had a mastectomy and want to restore the appearance of their breasts
  • Breasts that are not the same size or shape, and want to restore symmetry
  • Lost a substantial amount of weight, resulting in sagging breasts
  • Breasts that are small in relation to your body, and want better body proportions

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?

During breast augmentation surgery, you will be placed under local or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will make incisions either through your armpits, in the crease under your breasts, or between the areola and the breast tissue. The skin is pulled away to form a pocket. A breast implant is placed into the pocket and centered on the breast. The implant is then filled with saline and the incision is closed. The procedure takes between 1 and 3 hours and can be performed either as an inpatient or an outpatient.

What Happens After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Drainage tubes may be placed in the surgical area for a few days to help drain the excess fluid. You may be given antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication. Some swelling and bruising at the surgery site are normal and can last from 3 to 5 weeks. Our plastic surgeon may recommend wearing a surgical bra to help support your breasts. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for up to 4 weeks.
