What Doctor Treats Vascular Problems

vascular problems

Vascular problems are those of different vein conditions such as the existence of varicose, spider and reticular veins. They arise when veins are put into too much pressure during blood circulation. When veins are pressured, the inner lining of these veins become thick thus making them harder and visible to the eye. Some veins, due to extreme pressure, can cause a bulge or can protrude on the skin.

Vein conditions or more properly called as vascular problems are treated by a vascular surgeon. These doctors, upon positive diagnosis of vascular problems in their patients, could suggest different remedies depending on the severity of the vascular problem. They, too, treat a wide rage of health problems relating to veins to prevent fatal occurrences such as aneurysms as well as manage chronic conditions for wellness. Other conditions that can be treated are carotid artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and more.

At the onset of the appearance of vascular problems, doctors would first try to manage it by checking the which prompted the existence of such. Studies show that women are more prone to getting varicose veins than men. Most vascular problems can be attributed to heredity that if your family members have these, it is highly likely that you will also be prone to it. Heredity is the most common cause of these vein conditions. Other factors include obesity which then lead to bad posture when standing. When weight is not balanced between both legs, veins tend to be more pressured during blood circulation. Prolonged standing and sitting position can also lead to this. Pregnant women are also prone to getting these due to increased weight.

There are different types of vascular veins.  Those that are large and are colored either blue and dark purple which has a cord-like appearance are protruding on the skin are varicose veins and are commonly found on the legs. Spiders’ veins are smaller veins colored red or blue veins on the legs and face and may cover small, or large areas. They are more visible since they appear on the top-most layer of the skin and look like small tree branches or spider webs. Occasionally, spider veins will appear on the face, called Facial Telangiectasia. These are small, red, or purple blood vessels that can be caused by a number of skin conditions, including sun damage, heredity, rosacea, hot and spicy food, exercise or emotions. Reticular veins also known as feeder veins are veins that are colored blue and green and can grow bigger due to pressure.

A lot of home remedies for treating vascular problems are available online but only a few have proven to be effective. The most common and effective treatment is through the use of compression stockings. Compression stockings are used to manage blood flow as well as assist patients with minimizing appearances of veins on the legs after surgery. This provides the wearer a consistent and steady pressure on the legs as well as controls the girth of the legs and prevent them from swelling. The doctor or physician will advise you on which size of stocking you could get as well as the amount of pressure that is best for your condition. Please note however that there are vascular problems relating to the heart such as atherosclerosis that can only be treated by cardiovascular surgeons. Atherosclerosis is a condition where fats, cholesterol, and other substances build-up in and on your artery walls that puts pressure on your veins during circulation. Once these veins are placed in too much pressure more than what they can handle, they run the risk of popping which will result in blood clots.

Practicing self-care is one of the best ways to resolve vascular problems. Being keen in monitoring body weight could lessen the probability of acquiring varicose veins on the legs. A good diet and exercise could not only help you resolve vascular issues but could also bring you wellness as a whole. Do note however that self-care only works in preventing the appearance varicose veins and the like but not in curing its existence.

For existing vein conditions, sclerotherapy, surgery and laser treatments are offered to patients. A sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure with for about 15 to 45 minutes. There will be multiple injections per session and the injections use a formula which intends to treat the veins affected. The solution or formula used works by damaging the endothelium inside of blood vessels which prompts the production of platelets to aid in the body’s natural healing process. These platelets attach themselves to the lining of the vessels and causes the blood vessel to clot. The clotted vein will then be replaced with tissue which then minimize the protrusion of veins and aid in better circulation of blood throughout the body.

Laser treatments are non-invasive and requires sessions lasting minimal to no downtime after treatment but may require multiple sessions for more visible results. Laser treatments utilizes a strong burst of laser light to be blasted in the affected area in as safe, measured and concise manner with the use of a laser machine. This laser treatment warms up the inner linings of veins and addresses the skin surrounding for a lighter appearance. The treatment of spider veins and small varicose veins are usually done through laser.

A minimally invasive procedure can be done by a vascular surgeon in the form of endovenous laser therapy or EVLT as well as radiofrequency ablation or RFA. EVLT uses a laser fiber while RFA uses a catheter in their procedures. Either the laser fiber or the catheter will be inserted to the vein and treat it from the insides of the vein. A laser or a radiofrequency device will control the whole procedure.

Other clinics and hospitals may also advise to take advantage of high ligation and vein stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy and endoscopic vein surgery or EVS. However, EVS is usually the last resort when all other procedures did not work due to the severity of the case such as leg ulcers. Like in the normal endoscopy procedure, this is an invasive procedure where a video camera will be inserted into the patient’s affected area to get a clearer view of the vein for treatment. Usual treatment to this includes vein removal through incisions.
